Speak up!

There’s not much point in coming here if you’re not going to bother to say anything.

This blog originated at the request of people who felt they wanted to discuss things free from the limitations of BBC moderation. I also got the impression (perhaps mistakenly) that these were people who actually wanted to do something rather than just talk about it. At the “what’s the problem?” stage people seemed happy to join in. Also, the “wish list“/”wouldn’t it be nice if …” ideas were fairly free-flowing.

Where it seems to have broken down is when it came to the practicalities of what to do. I certainly don’t have the answers – this wasn’t even my idea. Seems to me that if no-one can come up with anything practical that anyone else is prepared to go along with then it may well be the end of the line for this.

  1. Ok

EVERYBODY WITH SAVINGS OR A CURRENT ACCOUNT SHIFT THEM TO AN ETHICALLY RUN BANK AND TELL ALL YOUR FRIENDS / SET OFF AN E-MAIL CHAIN ALONG THE LINES OF.

”DO YOU WANT TO HELP FUND THESE PEOPLES PENSIONS AND BONUSES ( ADD PHOTOS OF VARIOUS CHIEF EXECS).

tHEN MOVE TO A MORE ETHICALLY RUN BANK AND SEND A MESSAGE TO THE POWERS THAT BE THAT THIS IS not ACCEPTABLE.

    IS THAT LOUD ENOUGH?

  3. Thought i would pop this on here also before it gets murderated…

Gordon is using his favoured tactics this morning combining arrogance , cynicism, opportunism and repitition.

While the leader of the opposition is in mourning he is pitching himself as the ‘GRAND PROTECTOR AND ARCHITECT OF A NEW GLOBAL BANKING SYSTEM THAT WILL…OF COURSE…HELP SMALL BUISINESESS AND HARD WORKING FAMILIES.

Of course, himself and the bankers labour so courted and rewarded with knighthoods in the good years are now conveniently ditched , thrown to the dogs in fact in a grasping attempt to save some votes now that their very cosy economic / political deal is busted. Big tax receipts in exchange for light regulation and knighthoods like confetti.

He thinks himslef so superior in inteligence that nobody could ever be smart enough to see through his smokescreen.

How long before we see Sarah Brown making ‘in promptu’speeches again I wonder?

Seeing the truth makes me feel so tired.

In terms of having an effect I think amore effective approach would be the modern high tech version of a riot.

A co-ordinated move of everyones bank accounts out of those institutions whom have proven to be immoral or irresponsible or both and into ethically run banks (there are a few). It would both send amessage to govenment and to the banks and those individuals whom are still feeding off the fat of p[revious poor decisions.

That way you would be sure that none of your salary or savings is contributing to immoral pension pavements.

All it would take is a well written e-mail chain to be set off, the net and peoples anger would do the rest…

I think they call it democracy…I dare you to moderate this out.

  7. I am sensing a deal of frustration in your posting and quite rightly so. All talk and no action? When I joined this blog I have to admit to feeling a little bit nervous in the sense of what I could contribute in any practical sense. I do not have any savings, I don’t own a house, I don’t have a job-I keep applying but at over 50 I am considered too old or conversely over qualified! I live a very simple life and consider myself very lucky-I’m a bit of a hermit really. Personally I feel overwhelmed by what is going on and scared in equal measures. I am a terrible cynic, and believe that by and large we get what we deserve. I was a lecturer for 25 years-Social Science predominantly-and believed in trying to change the system from within. Sadly it defeated me, although I believe passionately that education is the key. I would love to come up with some practical ideas, and I will try to persuade people to bank ethically-if there is such a thing.

  8. Helen,

Cynics are the true lovers of humanity, they do not seek to ‘care’ for ‘personal fulfillment’ they seek to care for the truth of a thing.

It did not defeat you by the way or you would not be here. You can only be defeated with your own permission, noboddy elses.

Rahere is bringing out the philosopher in me and I have started to post a few comments on his blog which i think you may like on past form. I am growing tired of all this finacial stuff, i can barely bring myself to read the Economist any more.

  9. OK, i’m being brave and speaking up!! I too am worried i don’t have anything to add to the project. i’m a learner in economics (and computers) and only started on computer investigating the whole economic mess as i have probably the biggest financial decision of my life to make! I have since come to realise that it is not just an accidental economic mess but the biggest fraud the world has seen, carried out by the people who are supposed to protect us and our intrests!!! I read Peston and the other popular bloggs daily in the hope of working out what to do but to be quite honest i end up going to bed with more worry evey night!! I am starting to feel like a bit of a spy tho reading all your conversations and not posting myself but there’s probably not much helpfull i could add really. I did find this on a comment on Peston today tho and wondered if it might be interesting?

I don’t know how to magically move addresses from one place to another so i’v copied it out!! it’s from comment 93 on Bob’s blogg about china.

I too am ejoying rahere’s other thread although am probably behind with my homework as can only follw the obvious leads some bits far too technical for me!! I have today discovered how to have 2 tabs open so may have 2 pages at once which is very usefull!!

I am suprised this site isn’t busier as the moderators are getting worse would have thought people would’ve jumped at the chance to speak freely??

Any way i’ll keep checking in and will help if think i can and meanwhile back to bob to see if anyone knows exactly what the interest rates are gonna be for the next 20 years or if we are going to have a banking system atall!!

oh and the buttons on my keyboard are taking up to ten seconds to respond when pressed which makes it rather difficult to type anyone have any ideas why?

    Hope you are all well

    Kind regards

    Nikki x
