After a judge ruled that its constitution could discriminate against non-white people on Friday, the British National Party was banned from accepting any new members. ”I hold that the BNP are likely to commit unlawful acts of discrimination in the terms on which they are prepared to admit persons to membership under their constitution”, said Judge Collins.

Nick Griffin acted swiftly to amend the BNP constitution, saying: “Section 4, which deals with the requirements for membership and includes the demand that members support all the principles of the party, is not protected. I have, therefore, with immediate effect changed the section 4 requirements, as I am entitled to do, to comply with the court order. What this means is that people can apply to join the BNP without having to endorse and support the principles of the party.”

Regardless of whether or not you support the BNP’s aims, it does seem a little bizarre. After all, isn’t politics about creating new laws or amending existing ones?

I have some holiday over easter but for now I am going to become an investment banker this weekend and put a few pounds each way on ”offshore account” (33-1) running in the Grand National.

Wish me luck!

There’s not much point in coming here if you’re not going to bother to say anything.

This blog originated at the request of people who felt they wanted to discuss things free from the limitations of BBC moderation. I also got the impression (perhaps mistakenly) that these were people who actually wanted to do something rather than just talk about it. At the “what’s the problem?” stage people seemed happy to join in. Also, the “wish list“/”wouldn’t it be nice if …” ideas were fairly free-flowing.

Where it seems to have broken down is when it came to the practicalities of what to do. I certainly don’t have the answers – this wasn’t even my idea. Seems to me that if no-one can come up with anything practical that anyone else is prepared to go along with then it may well be the end of the line for this.

It’s occurred to me that something that could produce a different letter every time you clicked might be neat – a kind of random-rant generator. There’s actually quite a wealth of
<list)>

questions people could put to their MP

complaints

opinions

</list)>already – just from our own members.

If we could put these in a database it wouldn’t be too difficult to deal them out at random. If we had enough of these we could even give people a choice of tone: sarcastic, desperate, angry, threatening etc. Maybe a choice of subjects too: repossessions, bail-outs, small business issues, decline in manufacturing or whatever. Here’s a start: http://www.lobbygroup.org/RRG/

Add your comments/complaints/opinions/ to this post and let’s build up a stock of awkward questions.

To make the programming easier for me, please phrase them such as they would follow on from:
The question I would like to ask is . . . .
What annoys me is . . . .
I feel that . . . .

The printing money question – don’t say you were never warned about it!

Here’s an entertaining generic example …. Scott Pakin’s automatic complaint-letter generator for those who don’t want to wait for our own version.

and here’s a ready-made one

First posted on the original Lobby Group blog by contributor Bobrocket-

Here are a few of my ideas, what do you think.

Change corporate governance rules on executive renumeration so the the shareholders have to vote with only majority of votes cast deciding the issue (ie. don’t include the non-voting shares in favour of the board)

Change corporate accountancy rules to dis-allow off balance sheet accounting (I don’t actually know what off balance sheet means but it sounds dodgy to me

Change corporation tax to be exactly the same as income tax including personal allowance, progressive rate increases etc. (no reduction for small businesses, tax paid in current year, no asset depreciation)

Simplify UK income tax system, all income from whatever source is taxable but raise personal allowances.

Published and open standards of legally required qualification/licensing for professionals to allow free trade of skilled practioners (doctors, dentists, lawyers, scientists, academics etc. ).

Put an end to the practice of using unemployment as a tool to control inflation.

If you don’t like any of these, I’ve got some more.
